Self Portrait, long ago completed, finally photographed.

Here is my second days challenge, it is my first object for the week, an antique hand mirror. This is graphite and a little bit of digital shading.

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

I have decided to give myself a challenge for this week, starting today, I know a Tuesday, but as far as work is concerned it's my Friday, almost makes sense. So every day this week I will draw something that will fit into these categories: 3 animals or people, 2 objects such as machinery or teapots, and 1 landscape that may be painted. The last day is a freebie. If all goes well I will spend next week painting the drawings produced this week. Wish me luck!

The first of the project is an animal drawing for mother's day. I'll be making cards, and inside my own mother's card it will read: "Thanks Mom for always carrying me." Luckily she doesn't do the internet thing much, so the surprise won't be spoiled here.

I have been chanllenging myself every evening to find some art time for myself. A time with no plans or goals or commissions. I of course end up working late some nights, but those that I have free I have been doing these little paint sketches, mostly of faces and bodies, but more importantly of characters. Here are four such pieces from last week.

Stage two of my self portrait. Next I think I will work on the butterfly and edges of hair, then at last the joy of painting the face, and the struggle to make that hand work, which it is not at the moment.

Here is one of my favorite views of Mt. Tam from the Albany Waterfront.
Having grown up on Mt. Tam I am considering doing a series with the mountain in the background from various sites around the Bay Area. This is oil on canvas.

Here is the first stage for a self portrait I am working on. It is oil on canvas. I am still trying to decide whether to put color only on the butterfly (that color would be green) or if I ought to paint the whole thing. I originally meant to have a monochrome painting with a color butterfly, but now that I have started I think I would really enjoy giving everything color, though I think I'd keep it muted.
